bracketing the enemyMarch 24, 2014 – John R. Walker was the speaker at our first member meeting of 2014.  Walker discussed his book Bracketing the Enemy: Forward Observers in World War II, published in August 2012. The book details the history of artillery forward observation usage, which began with the Civil War. The author uses two units in which his father served as examples in the book. arcadiasilverlakeApril 28, 2014 – Join us April 28th for a special program by local author Mary McClure. Mary will discuss her latest book by Arcadia Publishing – Silver Lake Park. Did you know Silver Lake Park was once known as “the Coney Island of the West”? Silver Lake was one of the most popular summer resorts in this part of the country during the late 19th and early 20th centuries. Mary will present the history of the park and have copies of her new book (publication date  4/07/2014) for sale. Click here to read more about Mary’s book. clara-4thAvenueroof (1)dragonfly_closeup_69-003_152_197 (1)June 23, 2014 – Stow resident Linda Alexander will speak about her ancestor, Clara Wolcott Driscoll. Clara, born in Tallmadge, Ohio, designed most of the famous Tiffany lamps for Louis Comfort Tiffany. Clara never received credit for her designs or for her efforts in running the Tiffany Studios until 100 years after she left the TIffany Studios in New York. Learn about this fascinating woman, who was the inspiration for the novel Clara and Mr. Tiffany by Susan Vreeland. To read more about Clara and her contributions to TIffany Studios, click here. Linda will also have copies of the book Noon at Tiffany’s, an historical biographical novel by Echo Heron for sale. This program will take place at Stow City Hall.

August 25, 2014 – annual picnic at Heritage Reserve Barn at 6:30 p.m.  Bring a your table service and a dish to share. Fried chicken and drinks will be provided. Note time change to 6:30 p.m.

 

maple lawn cemetery resizedSeptember 22, 2014 – Sharon Myers, local resident and founder of the William Wetmore Chapter Daughters of 1812,  will discuss Historic Cemeteries of Summit County.The presentation will include historic, spooky, and beautiful cemeteries. Learn about the background of some of these cemeteries that date back to the 1700’s or before.

 

geoff elliottOctober 27, 2014 – Noted Lincoln expert, Geoff Elliott, will discuss Abraham Lincoln: A Life of Tragedy and Triumph. He will look at how Abraham Lincoln overcame multiple tragedies during his life, achieving remarkable personal triumphs and immortality. Geoff is author of the Abraham Lincoln Blog.     November 24, 2014 – election of 2015 officers December 2014 – luncheon and installation of officers – time and place to be announced
